Nkana Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC), based in 2nd largest city of Kitwe in the Copperbelt Province, Zambia with around 65000 water connections, has officially launched its first STS prepaid water meter project of 14000 STS meters. The project commenced at the beginning of April 2018 and onsite training sessions were conducted for all the relevant staff. By the end of October 2018, NWSC has already collected around USD855000 in total from the proceeds of LAISON STS meters within 6 months and only in the month of October, it reached its record level with about USD190000, while the payment collection through Mobile Money Platforms increased from USD2000 in August to USD40000 in October after the integration completed in the mid of August 2018. For the first time NWSC has started to recover its debt from low cost areas where it was almost impossible to collect substantial revenue without carrying out mass disconnection. Labour costs associated with mass disconnections is now a thing of the past for NWSC and efforts are now being channelled to inspections and customer care.
